Entrusting someone with the care of your loved one is probably one of the most important decisions you will need to make in your lifetime. When deciding whom you will entrust, consider that this person will have access not only to your loved one’s home but also to his or her life. It’s important to put safeguards in place to protect your loved one and your family.

Should you choose a home care agency or hire privately? While hiring privately may seem economically appealing, there are some important questions to consider before entrusting your loved one’s care to someone else.

  1. What are their references and credentials? Are they licensed or certified to provide care to older adults? 2. How long has the caregiver or home health care provider been in business? 3. Is the home health care provider bonded and insured? 4. Has the caregiver (agency or independent caregiver) passed an Agency for Health Care Administration Level II national criminal background screening? 5. Are there backup caregivers should the caregiver you hired become ill, and are they background screened and bonded? 6. Who will be supervising the caregiver to ensure proper care is administered? 7. What type of care will your loved one need—24 hour or a few hours? 8. Do you have a care plan that meets your loved one’s needs?

Do your due diligence. You don’t want to find your loved one in harm’s way. Not everyone is trained or specialized in caring for the elderly, and not everyone has the patience or compassion to deal with the challenges of aging, so do your homework. It will pay off in the long run.

On May 11, 2023, United HomeCare® will proudly present the Claude Pepper Awards in memory of the late Senator Claude Pepper, a beloved public servant who tirelessly championed causes on behalf of the elderly and is credited with giving us the Older Americans Act of 1965. This signature legislation helps older Americans to age with dignity in the comfort of their homes with the care and support services they need and deserve.

It is still true today that having quality of life in one’s later years often requires a helping hand, frequently more than family members can provide physically or financially. It is here that community philanthropy plays a vital role.

United HomeCare® has served thousands of older adults in South Florida since 1973 with the sole mission of providing that helping hand. To continue Claude Pepper’s legacy, each year United HomeCare recognizes individuals and corporations who have demonstrated leadership and compassion for the elderly and disabled and inspired others through their actions. Through their generosity of treasure, time and talent, South Florida is a better place for us all.

Please join us in congratulating the 2023 Claude Pepper Award Honorees! Healthcare Innovation: Dr. Stephen D. Nimer, University of Miami Health System, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center; Corporate Service-Health Care: Joe Natoli, Baptist Health; Corporate Service: Maximo Alvarez, Sunshine Gasoline Distributors, Inc.; Thelma Gibson Community Service: Yolanda Cash Jackson, Esq.; Community Builder: The Honorable Daniella Levine Cava, Mayor, Miami-Dade County; Public Service: The Honorable Ileana Garcia, Senator.

Join us on May 11th to honor South Florida’s Champions of Aging and community leaders by purchasing a Sponsorship or Tickets to our Claude Pepper Awards Luncheon at The Pullman Hotel – Blue Lagoon. For more information, please contact Alina Palenzuela at 305.716.0764 or Amber Rodriguez 305.215.4678. RSVP at https://bit.ly/ ClaudePepper2023

In the words of the late Senator Claude Pepper, a beloved public servant who tirelessly championed causes on behalf of the elderly, “They deserve much, and they need much.” Senator Pepper is credited with giving us the Older Americans Act of 1965. This signature legislation helps older Americans to age with dignity in the comfort of their homes with the care and support services they need and deserve.

According to The Giving USA Foundation, there are few organizations serving Americans 65 or older—a population that is growing and estimated to be 98.2 million by 2060. United Home Care® has served clients in Miami- Dade County since 1973. While most of our clients qualify for services under aging and healthcare programs, we frequently encounter service needs not covered by those programs. It is here that community philanthropy plays a vital role.

Therefore, to continue Claude Pepper’s legacy, we annually recognize individuals and corporations who have demonstrated leadership and compassion for the elderly and disabled while inspiring others through their actions. On May 12, 2022, United HomeCare will proudly present the Claude Pepper Awards Luncheon at the Pullman Hotel, Miami. Stay tuned as we announce our esteemed speaker and this year’s distinguished 2022 Claude Pepper Honorees for the following awards:

Active Living • Thelma Gibson Community Service • Community Builder • Public Service • Media Service • Corporate Service • Corporate Service Healthcare

If you would like to help United HomeCare continue to “Transform Senior Living” by volunteering, making a donation, sponsoring or by purchasing tickets please contact us by calling 305.716.0710 or visiting http:// www.unitedhomecare.com/en/charitable-giving/sponsorship-levels.aspx.
