As a way to complement the energetic, hectic and vibrant lifestyle of Miami, 305-Life was created to provide daily dietary supplements with formulas focused on improving everyday life, recovery and energy for customers. The health and wellness lifestyle brand hopes to capitalize on the growing supplement industry and is led by a group of local entrepreneurs featuring industry experts, experienced fitness trainers and marketing professionals, including Grammy-award-winning artist Pitbull. The group, known as 30V-Collective, aims to inspire consumers to seek the most out of life by providing quality dietary products featuring popular flavors.

“It’s an honor to partner and co-found 305-Life,” says Armando Christian Perez (Pitbull). “In these times, it’s important that people take care of themselves. We all work hard to achieve our goals while balancing family, friends and whatever life throws our way. 305-Life is all about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and help those who strive to be a better version of themselves.

According to Fortune Business Insights, the global dietary supplements industry is expected to reach over $117 billion by 2027. The growth is attributable to the growing interest in personalized nutritional supplements amid the increasing prevalence of persistent diseases like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and other heart issues.

While there is so much demand, consumers are overwhelmed with all the supplement options currently on the market,” says 305-Life cofounder Roger Yuan. “There aren’t true leaders. Current brands are not hitting the key health benefits and providing great taste. As a professional trainer who specializes in movement, martial arts, and action design for big budget Hollywood films and works with touring music entertainers like Armando, I saw the need for a product that suits the way people truly live their lives. Consumers are suffering pill fatigue with all the drugs and vitamins they take daily. Our ready-mix dosage packet solves that pain point and is both convenient and flavorful while keeping you vitalized and energized to take on each day.”

The company has introduced its offerings online and will focus on consumer markets with significant health and wellness demands like in New York, Los Angeles and Miami. The products come in individual portable packs that can be mixed into water. Recommended usage is one packet per day mixed in 12 fluid ounces of still or sparkling water. All supplements sell for $60 per box, which includes 30 packets and are available online only. The line will consist of a daily supplement and two boosters. Ingredients for 305-Life are globally sourced and tested by 21st Century, an accredited production facility with over 25 years of experience crafting award-winning health supplements using natural flavors.

The brand plans to expand into other industries in the coming years, including beauty, bath and body products. It also features a membership platform to the 305-community featuring online guidance and training for health and wellness. Portions of the proceeds from 305-Life sales will benefit SLAM! Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization representing 12 public charter schools across campuses in Florida, Nevada and Georgia.

From cardiology to HIV treatment, and from oncology to orthopedics, Broward Health, one of the nation’s largest public health care systems, continues to expand the Broward Health Physician Group, a network of more than 200 employed physicians.

“With the addition of these highly regarded medical experts, Broward Health has further augmented the high-quality care it provides to the South Florida community,” says physician Andrew Ta, executive vice president and chief medical officer of Broward Health. “We are thrilled to welcome these professionals, some of whom lead clinical trials, to our family.”

The announcement of more than a dozen key hires comes on the heels of a major departure at the top: Gino Santorio, president and CEO at Broward Health, is stepping down after a successful two-year tenure to join Mount Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami, the largest independent nonprofit teaching hospital in South Florida. In February, he will succeed Steven Sonenreich, who is leaving the position after 19 years but will remain at Mount Sinai in a consultative capacity.

Santorio widely was credited with providing stability and direction to Broward Health at a fraught time in its history, and Santorio nods to the fact that he is leaving the hospital system in a strong place. “Broward Health is well positioned with experienced leaders and dedicated caregivers who will continue the success of the system,” he says. “I will forever be in awe of the passion displayed by the Broward Health team and applaud the system’s achievements as we all champion the health of the South Florida community.”

In his resignation letter, Santorio wrote: “Against an arduous backdrop of challenges inclusive of a global pandemic, a corporate integrity agreement and historical organizational instability, we have prevailed and remain poised for continued success.”

Santorio explained that he wanted to be closer to family in Miami-Dade, while North Broward Hospital District Commissioner Ray Berry conceded that compensation likely played a role: “A public health system can never pay what a private system can. We knew he would eventually leave.” Berry has suggested that a nationwide search to replace Santorio is likely.

Whoever steps into Santorio’s shoes would be assuming the leadership of a major health system that has been providing service for more than 80 years. The Broward Health system includes the statutory teaching hospital Broward Health Medical Center, Broward Health North, Broward Health Imperial Point, Broward Health Coral Springs, Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital, Broward Health Weston, Broward Health Community Health Services, Broward Health Physician Group, Broward Health Urgent Care, Broward Health International and Broward Health Foundation.

The Broward Health Physician Group, which has treated more than 230,000 patients in the last fiscal year, boasts more than 1,600 affiliated community physicians. Now it has 19 more pairs of healing hands.

Jungle Island, one of Miami’s best-known attractions, invites visitors to take a walk on the wild side. And in the future, it hopes to invite visitors to expand on their stay with a new hotel and attractions.

Last month, The Real Deal reported that the Miami Planning and Zoning Appeals Board approved a proposal from Jungle Island owner ESJ Capital Partners for the development of a 300-room hotel, attractions and a retail complex. Passing 5-2, the proposal was a special area plan, allowing for dense projects that have public benefits. ESJ also requested that the zoning designation be changed to restricted commercial.

ESJ hopes to obtain building permits by 2023 as required by its lease. The approval is one step forward for the Aventura-based company, which had to submit an SAP proposal after previous zoning applications were delayed for more than a year.

ESJ’s plans for Jungle Island, which sits on 18.5 acres on Watson Island, include an eight-story hotel on top of a four-story parking garage with a sculpted garden on the rooftop. Matching Jungle Island’s theme, the garage would feature vines and green walls. Two buildings already on the property would be renovated and expanded to encompass 40,000 square feet of meeting rooms, retail and restaurant space.

If approved by the city commission, the improvements are set to benefit the city. Rent will increase to $1.2 million a year and 5% of gross revenues when the hotel is operating. Another benefit would be $650,000 for affordable housing.

Check out renderings of the proposed changes below.

Long known for its commitment to the arts, the Knight Foundation is supporting arts institutions that need more support than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. This month, the organization continues its support with the announcement of a $2.2 million investment in nine Miami arts organizations.

This latest investment follows the foundation’s Knight New Work 2020, during which 18 Miami-based artists were awarded $10,000 each to create new performing arts works that reimagine how the performing arts are created and experienced during COVID-19 and beyond.

“With the challenges of the pandemic, we’re seeing that the arts are more essential than ever,” said Victoria Rogers, Knight’s vice president for arts. “Knight’s investments in these Miami arts and cultural organizations build on our vision of a Miami where art is inclusive and accessible to all, even amid a pandemic.”

The grantees are finding new ways to share art during the pandemic and the funding from the Knight Foundation is set to support these innovations, including technological ones.

“Arts organizations have not only had to pivot in how they produce and promote their work, but they’ve also incorporated new strategies to increase their reach during a time of physical distancing and beyond,” said Priya Sircar, Knight’s arts program director. “Our investments recognize the incredible work these organizations do and accelerate their ability to expand programming, incorporate digital strategies, and in some cases hire new personnel to help increase audience engagement.”

Below are the grantees and their upcoming projects.

Third Horizon ($750,000): To support operations and a digital strategy to grow from an acclaimed film festival and arts collective to a primary source for developing Caribbean and Caribbean-American filmmakers in the U.S. The grant encompasses a five-year plan of support for core staffing, a new artist residency that will commission and develop works by at least seven Miami filmmakers per cohort and the expansion of the organization’s online programming.
Miami City Ballet ($250,000): To support MCB’s innovative outdoor production of George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker” in December at Doral Downtown Park through the 31st. Knight’s investment allowed for the acquisition of an LED modular backdrop that served as the set for the ballet and where videos will be projected during the performance. Additionally, the funds will allow for video editing, promotional materials and a custom-designed digital storyboard used for production.
Featured image: Bookleggers Library ($250,000): To support the digital expansion and post-COVID adaptation of this donations-based library in Miami. The support will expand the library’s operations to include new online programming and will reimagine in-person programming throughout Miami-Dade and support core staffing. Currently, the library serves a growing audience with a mission of increasing general interest and access to literature.
Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami ($250,000): To allow the museum to hire curatorial and communications staff to work on the production of global art that connects with the local community. The Curator will oversee the museum’s artistic vision and produce new content around exhibitions and the museum’s permanent collection. The Director of Communications will implement comprehensive digital outreach strategies to Miami’s diverse community, work on increasing audiences and ensure ADA accessibility. Both positions will complement the museum’s vision of making contemporary art accessible to diverse audiences, especially underserved populations.
Prizm Projects ($200,000): To present year-long arts programming focused on the African diaspora through exhibitions, public talks and digital platforms. Knight’s support will allow the arts organization to develop an online platform, which kicked off with the virtual Prizm Arts Fair this month. In addition, the investment will allow Prizm to showcase digital and in-person exhibitions and to hire an operations manager.
Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, Inc. ($150,000): To allow ICA Miami to reach new online audiences with digital artworks by Miami artists starting in 2021. ICA Miami will use the grant to commission an ongoing series of digital works by Miami artists and to create new programs, culminating in a presentation at the museum. This new support increases audience access to new works via digital means.
Miami Dade College Foundation ($150,000): To support the digital transformation of the Miami Book Fair through virtual programming and the development of a new online streaming platform. The investment allowed for the development of the fair’s response to physical distancing — the Miami Book Fair Online. The new online streaming platform, which launched Nov. 15, is integrated to the Book Fair’s new website and includes pre-recorded author presentations, performances, conversations, live author events, Q&A sessions, education and entertainment material for children. Additionally, the funding has been used for marketing for the Miami Book Fair Online platform to reach existing and potential audiences, nationally and internationally. It will also assist with the virtual production of three new and existing programs: the National Book Awards Program, Here in Florida and the 2020 Poetry program.
Nite Owl Theater ($124,800): To create a unique drive-in theater experience in downtown Miami. The Knight Foundation’s support will enable the Nite Owl to transition from 35mm to laser digital cinema projection that is retrofitted into an airstream trailer. This mobile projection booth and state-of-the-art equipment will allow Nite Owl to host a one-of-a-kind drive-in theater experience: a 4-week film series in a green space covering an entire city block.
Miami City Ballet ($67,500): To support the commission of two digital dance works at Miami City Ballet. The funds assist with space rental, outfitting, production expenses and video production associated with the works. One of the commissions is “Places”, a remotely choreographed piece that was streamed virtually.
Coral Gables Community Foundation ($35,000): To support Illuminate Coral Gables, a tech-enabled public art exhibit in downtown Coral Gables scheduled for February 2021, which is intended to become an annual event. The free exhibition will safely engage Miami communities with digital art and sculptures presented in public spaces in Coral Gables. Knight’s investment will go toward artists’ honoraria, artwork fabrication, installation costs and production expenses.

Business backstory: The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (miamiandbeaches.com) is the official, accredited destination sales and marketing organization for Miami-Dade County, dedicated to generating travel demand to Greater Miami and the Beaches to maximize economic impact to the community, ensure industry resiliency, and elevate the resident quality of life. Talbert (pictured left), who joined the bureau as chief operating officer in 1990, has served as president and CEO of the organization for the past 20-plus years.

The impact: “When the pandemic hit, we moved quickly, first to shore up our internal team so we could shift our attention to the hospitality industry. Within three days of hearing that dining rooms were closing, the GMCVB rolled out a recovery effort called Miami Eats, which was essentially a massive resource of all local restaurants offering takeout and delivery. It started at fewer than 300 restaurants and quickly grew to over 1,300; it’s still going on today.

“In May, we created Miami Shines, which served as the umbrella for our Temptations programs—Miami Spice, Miami Spa, and Museum & Attractions Offerings. These were all extended to give locals and visitors safe things to do upon Phase 3 of reopening. We also launched MiamiLand to encourage outdoor exploration; and Work & Learn Remotely, a roster of hotel specials to give families and those working from home a change of scenery.

“We recently held our annual meeting, which was a hybrid meeting and actually the first event hosted at the Miami Beach Convention Center since March. We are cautiously moving forward.”

Moving forward: “The key is keeping our programming flexible so we can be nimble to changes. For example, we created Miami Shines to be broad and [far-reaching] enough so that it can easily be adopted for other purposes. We’re extending it because of the success achieved so far.

“Next up is another beloved Temptations program housed under the Miami Shines umbrella—Miami Arts, Culture and Heritage Months. The program goes through Jan. 31 and allows locals and visitors to immerse themselves in cultural gems and institutions across Greater Miami and the Beaches, things like virtual and in-person art exhibitions, special hotel offerings and outdoor excursions. It also runs in tandem with Art of Black Miami, a marketing platform that honors visual arts of the black diaspora.”

COVID-19 insights: “Like our partners—from restaurant owners, to hotel operators and spa practitioners—I have learned the importance of being flexible and keeping my cool. Every day brings something new, but I power through and keep my chin up. If there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s the resilience of our destination and our people, and I find comfort in that.”

Visitors Bureau Hosts Annual Meeting

Nearly 500 people tuned in virtually and another 200 attendees observed socially distanced regulations in person at the Miami Beach Convention Center as the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau held its annual Tourism Meeting. The gathering, held in late October, marked the first official event at the convention center since March.

Participants learned about the Miami tourism industry’s plans for 2021, and those attending in person had an opportunity to tour the convention center, which reopened with new safety features and guidelines. The bureau announced two events on the books for Miami-Dade County next year—the Aesthetic Society convention is slated for April, and the Latin Grammy Awards are scheduled for November.

In addition to William Talbert, CEO of the bureau, speakers included Bruce Orosz, chairman of the board of the bureau, and representatives from the Miami Beach Convention Center, as well as renowned South Florida trial lawyer Michael Chavies of Akerman, ranked among the top 100 law firms in the United States.

Miami’s hip Wynwood district attracts visitors from all over the world, so it’s no surprise it attracted a unique hospitality concept.

Brooklyn’s bespoke hospitality concept FREEHOLD opened its second location earlier this month in Wynwood, offering a wide range of day-to-night accommodations and entertainment. Brand developers Brice Jones and Brad Gallagher describe their hospitality concept as “reminiscent of a bustling boutique hotel—without the actual hotel rooms.”

FREEHOLD will offer a multi-use community space for Miami’s upwardly mobile set. Designed by the award-winning architecture and design firm Rockwell Group, each space was created intentionally to offer a carefully-curated ambience enhancing the experience based on the time of day and programming. As an all-day all-night environment, with a menu to match; the transitional space includes multiple bars, a Pizza Shop, a café, a spacious courtyard, and event space.

“We fell in love with Wynwood in 2015 and believed our concept would be a perfect fit for the ever-growing neighborhood as Freehold is so much more than just a bar or a restaurant. We know we’ve accomplished our goal as creators when we see our guests arrive and utilize the space to work or host a meeting during the day and then stay to enjoy cocktails as the space transforms in the evening, offering a completely different ambience,” said Jones.

Upon entry, guests will find the café, which offers a full Third-Wave coffee bar featuring Counter Culture Coffee, along with light bites. Beyond the Café is the “Front Desk” at the entrance of the expansive Lobby Bar, the true heart of the space, where robust culinary offerings, a full bar and a spacious common area are available, all reminiscent of a hotel lobby. On weekdays, the Lobby Bar will serve as an interactive dining and creative space. With the installment of cabinetry covers, a retractable panel will veil the back bar liquor display and televisions, offering an authentic daytime atmosphere. As the sun goes down, Happy Hour arrives, enhanced by FREEHOLD’s trademark programming, which will bring an inspired mixture of entertainment in all categories from live music to comedy and more.

One of FREEHOLD’s newest programs celebrates decadence with an edge: Oysters & Bubbles with G.H. Mumm. From 8 p.m. to close each Thursday, guests can indulge in $1 oysters and $6 glasses of G.H. Mumm champagne while enjoying entertainment from a rotation of the best local female DJs.

Beyond the Lobby Bar is the 4,000-square-foot Courtyard, featuring a cumaru wood “pool deck” with creative seating, leading to the central focal point, a sprawling Freehold Teal turfed area for lounging. Reminiscent of a hotel swimming pool, that you can sit inside. Here, guests can enjoy different seating options, perfect for relaxing or enjoying a meal outdoors while listening to their favorite local DJ. The Courtyard also offers a trellis roof, bringing a bit of respite from the sun, and a stage for live performances. The 750-square foot Cabana Room will be strategically located adjacent to the Courtyard, offering the public a private event and activation space.

Bringing a slice of New York flair to Miami, FREEHOLD selected Pizza aficionado, Anthony Falco, to assist in the creation of The Pizza Shop at FREEHOLD, a concept that is inspired by NYC slice joints of the 1970s. Hailing from New York’s famed pizza shop Robertas, Falco has created for FREEHOLD a signature thin & crispy style for guests to enjoy, surrounded by customary tomato-red booths and backlit by hanging stained glass lamps, another one of Rockwell Group’s imaginative details.

“Our expansive overall program here at FREEHOLD has allowed us the ability to showcase our brand even during these unprecedented times.  We have made our culinary program our focal point during the past few months in launching our thin & crispy pizza, which has added another layer to our ever-evolving brand. We are excited to bring it all to Wynwood!” said Gallagher.

FREEHOLD is located at 2219 NW Second Ave., Miami. Click here for more info.

Not going out on New Year’s Eve doesn’t mean sacrificing a great cocktail experience.

Earlier this month, delivery service Sourced Craft Cocktails expanded its services to Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, allowing new customers to try at-home kits and draft cocktails prepped by local bartenders. Even better, orders received by 2 p.m. and delivered the same day.

The Austin-based company already delivers in New York, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco and other cities.

“South Florida has been on our radar for some time. We’re honored to bring the area our refreshing, quality cocktails,” said Tim Angelillo, founder and CEO of Sourced Craft Cocktails. “Partnering with reputable and creative brands like Bacardi allows us to not only deliver quality drinks, but experiences so that our customers can enjoy a momentary escape and continue to create memories while social distancing.”

To enjoy at home, customers can order cocktail kits at the Sourced website. The cocktail kits come with a recipe booklet, jigger, one 750-milliliter bottle of the appropriate spirit along with a bottle of batched cocktail mixer for up to 12 drinks, made locally from fresh fruits, juices and other ingredients.

South Florida residents can take advantage of the company’s partnership with Bacardi and enjoy the Bacardi Añejo Cuatro Kit.

Plus, regulars can enjoy the Draft Pass program, which includes one small or large draft cocktail infuser (to keep) filled with a fresh, quality batched cocktail (first cocktail comes free) that stays fresh when refrigerated for up to seven days. After that, customers can place orders to refill the infuser with additional batched cocktails from the Draft Pass menu. Sourced’s local bartender team will pick up the infuser, clean it and refill it with another custom quality cocktail, returning it to its owner for easy enjoyment.
